Article XI of the SEM Constitution, "Chapters"
1.
The Middle Atlantic Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology (hereafter,
MACSEM) includes members from the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, New
Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina. It
shares membership with other chapters in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania,
Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina.
2.
Members of MACSEM may nominate other members of the Chapter to run for office
in the Chapter. MACSEM elects officers by secret ballot at its annual meeting.
If no nominations are made, officers may be appointed by the president in
consultation with the executive.
3.
At the time of their election, MACSEM officers normally serve a 2-year term.
Officers cannot serve consecutive terms.
4.
The MACSEM Program Committee is normally constituted as follows: the MACSEM
president appoints a faculty or professional member to serve as Program
Committee Chair. The president and chair additionally appoint to the Program
Committee a slate of MACSEM members that is as broadly representative of the
region as possible. The Program Committee should normally have an odd number of
members, usually five.
5.
The MACSEM Local Arrangements is normally constituted as follows. The MACSEM
president appoints a faculty member from the host institution as chair of the
Local Arrangements Committee. The Local Arrangements Chair appoints to the
Local Arrangements Committee other faculty or students, normally from the host
institution.
6.
MACSEM awards the Hewitt Pantaleoni Prize each year to the best student paper
delivered at the annual meeting, as determined by the vote of an ad hoc
committee of faculty present at the meeting, appointed by the President. The
Pantaleoni Prize was established in 1990 in memory of ethnomusicologist Hewitt
Pantaleoni, and carries a cash award.
7.
MACSEM occasionally awards the Lifetime Achievement Award to selected MACSEM
members who have made significant contributions to the discipline of
ethnomusicology, and to the Chapter itself. This award is made only
occasionally, at the discretion and by unanimous consent of MACSEM's officers.
